Stroll
Combining danceable grooves and thoughtful wordplay is nothing new – think Curtis Mayfield or Sly Stone – but TJ Reynolds & the Freehand Orchestra bring a fresh spark to the time-honored tradition.
With a veteran roster the size of a baseball team, the Indianapolis-based band delivers a dizzying mix of music and mood that ranges from aggressive hip-hop and rock to jazzy, horn-enhanced funk and soul.
MC/lead vocalist Reynolds and his socially conscious rhymes have been a fixture on the city’s rap and spoken-word scene for a decade or more, since his days as a member of African-influenced hip-hop collective the Undefeatable Beats and a ringleader at the United States of Mind performance space.
Supporting him are drummer Joseph Lehner, a longtime collaborator; bassist/vocalist Ron “Poncho” Hedrick, leader of the progressive funk band Blackberry Jam; keyboardist/vocalist Mina Keohane, who studied jazz composition at Boston’s Berklee School of Music and now leads the jazz-pop ensemble Mina & the Wondrous Flying Machine; and guitarist Scott Hall, who brings a classic rock and R&B vibe to the proceedings. The horn section features Josh Silbert (ex-Johnny Socko, ESW) and Brian Hoover on saxophones; Hubert Glover (ex-Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s) on trumpet and trombone; and Bret Reyburn on trombone and trumpet.
The band’s 2011 debut album, Purpose, showcases a range of styles, from smooth urban pop and Memphis-style soul to reggae and prog-rock. Live shows are punctuated by instrumental interplay and Reynolds’ in-your-face, freestyling, bar-strolling antics.
In 2012, TJ Reynolds & the Freehand Orchestra will be performing regionally, developing videos and returning to the studio.
