Indiana Avenue, a road that was once home to one of the largest Black communities in the midwest, has a new Black Lives Matter mural.
Eighteen different artists participated in the painting of the new mural, which can be found catty-corner from the historic Madam Walker Legacy Center. The choice of location for the mural is no mistake — during the avenue's heyday, it was the center for Black culture in the city. Over time, however, the 30-plus clubs closed and much of the original architecture has been removed. Wildstyle Paschall, an Indianapolis-based visual artist and activist, penned a deep dive on the history of the avenue's ethnic cleansing for New America.
